After holding an intra-squad match earlier in the month out of the wrestling room in the Liberty Club Sports Complex, Liberty University’s women’s wrestling team held an intercollegiate tri-meet with competitors from Ferrum College, St. Andrews (N.C.) University, and The Apprentice School Saturday afternoon, Nov. 20, in the LaHaye Multipurpose Complex.
Lady Flames sophomore 170-pound wrestler Maile Ka'ahauni finished 2-0, while senior 191-pounder Rebekah Kemper went 3-1 to lead her team in wins and losses. At 116 pounds, junior Taylor Renee Martin posted a 2-2 record, while 136-pound senior Maria Ferello was 1-3 and sophomore 143-pounder Claudia Keanini 0-3.
"There were only a couple of official matches, and the majority were exhibition matches because the weight classes did not match up,” Liberty Head Coach Charisse (Manley) McIlhenny said. “This is the beginning of an exciting season ahead for LU Women's Wrestling, (and) we are very proud of how our women wrestled at this event. Overall, we had 8 total wins to 8 total losses which sets a good foundation for upward movement."
The Lady Flames will next travel to the Dec. 3-4 Patriot Duals Tournament hosted by the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.
